The United States has one of the largest automotive markets in the world. According to Business France the success of the light commercial vehicle market is one of the main factors promoting overall industry growth. With 17.3M lightweight vehicles sold in 2018, the light commercial vehicle market accounts for 69 % of overall sales).

Pickup trucks, Crossover Vehicles (CUVs) and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) continue to be the fastest growing sections of the lightweight vehicle industry in the US. In 2018, the light truck industry saw an increase in sales of 7.7 %.

  • Jeep, one of the region’s main manufacturers of light trucks, saw an increase of +17% in 2018.
  • Tesla also experienced success with their production of the Model 3 - their mid-range sedan model, producing 146,000 units over the year.

    This resulted in a 367% increase in sales with a Q4 record (76,320 vehicles sold, 33% more than all sales in 2017).

In comparison, car sales have experienced a sharp decline (-13.1%) representing 31% of new vehicle sales in 2018.
